Learning Lab – Hiring Students For Small Businesses

Join us in person, at the Barrie Public Library or on Zoom, for our October Learning Lab with Rebecca Kendall, Richard Birch and Leny Bayda from Georgian College, to explore Hiring Students for Small Businesses.

In this Learning Lab, we will discuss:

  • Benefits of hiring co-op students
  • Benefits of hiring international students
  • Student co-op availability and what that will look like for the employer’s recruitment process
  • Employer involvement in co-op student development
  • Next steps for job postings
  • Work permits for international students

Meet the Speakers:

Rebecca Kendall
Rebecca is a Career Consultant at Georgian College, and supports students across multiple campuses by offering career counselling and job searching support. She has held a variety of roles at the College, which has led her to support employers across multiple sectors in Simcoe County as well as serve a diverse population of students and community clients. Rebecca has a background in Employment Services and has served a variety of job seekers in multiple government-funded programs including youth, newcomers and students. Rebecca is passionate about empowering students to succeed through achieving their employment and career goals.

Richard Birch
Richard Birch recently joined Georgian College’s Co-operative Education and Career Success team as the Employer Relations Consultant for the Hospitality, Tourism, Recreation, Culinary, Golf & Aviation programs. Richard has several years’ experience in human resources with a focus on recruitment, training and development, and benefits coordination. He has spent the last decade working in the electricity utilities industry, and is excited to be now working with student and employer stakeholders in the framework of co-op education and career development.

Leny Bayda
Holds a Bachelor of Communications and Graduate Certificates in Human Resources Management and Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). Strong background in immigration case management and coordinating employment opportunities, gained through the immigration and employment firm Canadian Portal Immigration here in Barrie since 2015. Has taught Spanish privately and through La Clé d’la Baie for more than eight years. Has worked in several departments at Georgian College, such as the HR Department, Continuing Education and Corporate Training, International Education, English for Academic Purposes, Community Services through the Job Finding Club for Immigrants, and currently holds the role of International Experience Consultant in the Co-op and Career Success Department.
